Soviet troops armed with light machine guns attack German positions during the Battle of Stalingrad. The heavy losses inflicted on the Wehrmacht make it arguably the most strategically decisive battle of the whole war. It was a turning point in the war in Europe; the German forces never regaining the initiative in the East and withdrawing vast military force from the West to reinforce their losses. Stalingrad (Volgograd), Volgograd Oblast, Russia, Soviet Union. 26 November 1942.
